Push back pallet racking – a superb option for businesses looking to gain high-density storage without specialist handling equipment.
What is Push Back Pallet Racking?
Push back pallet racking is a flexible and cost-effective system where pallets are placed onto rails and push the previous pallet into the next location.
This application is suitable for fast-moving products or those where stock rotation is not critical.
In FILO (first-in,last-out) configuration, a forklift truck loads and unloads the pallets at the picking face. To load a pallet, the forklift truck pushes the pallet at the picking face towards the back of the lane using the pallet to be loaded.
When a pallet is unloaded, the pallet stored behind automatically takes its place, thereby ensuring that the goods are constantly available at the picking face.
Advantages of Push Back Pallet Racking:
- Increase storage density – using the racking close to a wall or on a mezzanine floor maximises the used floor area
- By using a roller bed application an infinite number of pallets can be stored in one lane
- Customisation – each lane can be customised to accept differing pallet sizes if required
- Easy stock control
- Racks are quick to load and unload
- No specialised manual handling equipment is required
Disadvantages of Push Back Pallet Racking:
- Limited stock accessibility – only the pallets at the front of the system are readily available
- Loss in vertical height storage – the system works on a slight incline occupying more vertical space
- FILO rotation – this system is not ideal for products that require strict date rotation
Things to Consider:
Push back pallet racking does not require any specialised handling equipment, standard forklifts can be used for this system. The inclined rails on the system mean that a forklift with extra reach is not required as the pallets slide into the next location without assistance.
This system also reduces the risk of damaging the racking as there is no requirement for the forklifts to drive into the racking.
